[Photos] Afternoon in a Woody Bower

Oak tree knots

We had the most incredible day in the woods. This magical live oak hammock is on the south end of our property near the remains of the first school house in the area. The trees were probably destroyed by long ago turpentine companies that didn’t want the oaks competing with the pines, but it felt like something straight out of Lord of the Rings. A good portion of the ground was like a trampoline of woven roots with animal burrows and probably a limestone sinkhole beneath it.
